Jessica Craig-Martin: Privilege (English and French Edition) Details
ccording to Glenn O Brien, Jessica Craig-Martin is the master (or perhaps we can still say mistress in this context) of the dark side of the glamour world and society pages. However, this claim is not for her charming images of socialites but rather the devilish details that normally escape the tidy veneer of these elevated worlds. Carefully cropped photographs eliminate the faces of her subjects, yet focus on the make-up, the augmented breasts, the jewels and sequins, the manicured nails and de hors de d oeuvres. The result is a captivating and realistic photographic essay on fashion, fantasy and illusion that is presented through 67 full-page colour photographs and accompanied by short essays from Glenn O Brien and Angus Cook.
Reviews
I am so thrilled that the brilliant photographer Jessica Craig-Martin finally has a monograph, and the great thing is that is super high quality. Really beautifully done. It includes many of her iconic images of the debauched antics of high society, which she seems to travel through with a uniquely razor-sharp eye for detail, plus recent works and hilarious essays by Glenn O'Brien and Angus Cook. The photos reveal the bloat at the upper end of western culture, the soft flesh, the hard jewels and the grotesque level of conspicuous consumption in a world that takes its advantages for granted. Most of all, the photos are great fun, often very witty observations, and the book is a great addition to any collection, and a great gift. I actually keep mine in the bathroom to amuse myself and guests...
